The Raccoons Came Back!!! I’m Not a Happy Camper!!!⛺️🤬🤬
It was 2 am on the last night of our tour when the racoons struck again. Even though I thought I had gotten all our food into the panniers and into the washrooms for safe keeping, I didn’t get everything.
Dax and I woke up to my bike being knocked over and the racoons trying to tear into my handlebar bag. I couldn’t figure out in the moment why the racoons were still going after the bike and dog trailer. It wasn’t till Dax had tore a hole in my sleeping pad trying to get to the raccoons for the second night in a row and me completely loosing my cool, I decided I had had enough, that I was going to pack up and leave the campground right then and there!! My thinking was, if I’m not going to get any sleep I may as well ride my bike. Honestly, I’m glad we didn’t have any neighbours that night because of the foul language that was coming out of me at a high volume!! Not a proud moment for me… but super funny to tell to my friends and family after the fact!! Ha!!🤣🤣🤣
As I started packing up in the pitch black, it didn’t take me too long to figure out that I had not gotten all the food off my bike. I had left a small bag of dates in my handlebar bag. The raccoons didn’t want the gum that was there, just the dates. I don’t blame them, I’d want the dates too. Unfortunately for them, they didn’t get the dates out before I got out of the tent and shoowed them away. All that work for nothing.. ha!! Karma!!
By the time my 4 am alarm chimed, I was putting the finishing touches on my bike and trailer. We started off towards London. It was very dark and my headlamp was not sufficient to see anymore than a few feet ahead of my front tire. So Dax and I took it slow and just trusted the GPS that we were going the right way. Fortunately at that time of the morning, there is very little traffic, the air was cool but humid. Still much better to travel in than the insufferable heat of the day yet to come.
We had to stop and take pics of the rising sun and later on, we stopped for a bite to eat at one of the fast food restaurants near the highway. The ride from Dorchester into London was mostly downhill, not much traffic and comfortably cool, both for Dax and myself. We were on the road for about 5 hours, but it felt a little shorter than that because it was comfortable riding. We got into London around 9 am. Our ride was almost done. Spent a few days with the family resting and visiting before riding the final 17 km to our home.
And that was another successful bike tour completed!!
